Huang Xing, male, born in February 1984, is a professor and doctoral supervisor of the school of chemistry of Fuzhou University, a distinguished professor of Minjiang scholars in Fujian Province, and a high-level young talent introduced by the country overseas. In 2008, Huang Xing was admitted by the Institute of physical and chemical technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences with excellent results and began to study for master’s and doctor’s degrees. After entering the Research Institute, he officially embarked on the road of scientific research and came into contact with the electron microscope for the first time. Although he always stumbled at the beginning, he never stopped his pace of learning and exploration. With day-to-day hard work, in just two years, he has obtained a large number of valuable experimental data.

In 2011, Huang Xing was selected into the China EU joint training program. As a visiting student of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, he came to the Fritz Haber Institute, the birthplace of electron microscopy, located in Berlin, Germany. The electron microscope group of the Institute has the world-class scientific research level. Here, Huang Xing systematically studied the relevant knowledge of transmission electron microscope and carried out more in-depth research on the doctoral project based on this. This year’s hard-earned experience of studying abroad has made a qualitative leap in his scientific research ability and achievements, and also opened a new door for his future scientific research. After that, Huang Xing went to the City University of Hong Kong for a short-term exchange visit, which further broadened his scientific research vision. When he graduated in 2013, he won the excellent award of the president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences for his rich scientific research achievements. In the same year, he received the invitation of Fritz Harper Institute of Max Planck Institute in Germany and began his post doctoral work in Germany.

“I was lucky to choose this research direction in the early days of the rise of in situ electron microscopy.” In 2013, in-situ electron microscopy gradually rose at home and abroad. The use of in-situ electron microscopy to study the structure of catalytic materials in reaction atmosphere has aroused great interest in the scientific community. Huang Xing’s electron microscope group is one of the earlier research groups to carry out in-situ electron microscope research, and specially built an in-situ carrier gas system for this purpose. During his work in Germany, Huang Xing participated in the cooperation project between Mapuche Institute and BASF company, a large German chemical enterprise. His research direction has gradually expanded from”non in situ” to”in situ”, and began to apply in situ electron microscopy to the research of heterogeneous catalysts. He has made a number of academic contributions and important innovative achievements with scientific value and socio-economic significance. In 2018, Huang Xing went to work at the Federal Institute of technology in Zurich (ETH Zurich, QS University ranked 6th in the world in 2021). In this world’s top research institution, his horizons have become broader, and he has also met many outstanding scientific researchers and has maintained good cooperative relations. Nine years of overseas scientific research practice and theoretical accumulation have laid a solid foundation for Huang Xing to make important scientific research achievements in the field of in situ electron microscopy in the future.

After years of studying and working abroad, he formed a keen intuition and insight in the field of in situ electron microscopy research, accumulated rich and valuable research experience, and finally achieved impressive results! In 2022, Huang Xing, together with Willinger and Bokhoven, made a major breakthrough in the study of in situ electron microscopy of metal carrier interaction. This achievement was published in the world’s top journal Science and received extensive attention from the academic community.
